Program Note
In Ampere, the bassoon solo echoes the definition of its title — meaning a unit of electrical current — in its whimsical, fast-paced character. With fluttering woodwinds and brass like flying sparks, the piece chases the quick and erratic nature of electricity, creating a certain mischievous charm with all its glittering interjections and percussive effects. This spirited character soon transitions into a lyrical and almost magical sort of ballad, before picking up with battery-like percussion into a new and more playful rendition of the theme, bringing the whole piece to an electrifying finale.
